Indian head massage is derived from the ancient Ayurvedic healing system, which teaches self-care and prevention of illness. It is incorporated into a persons daily routine to stimulate the body's natural healing ability and to maintain good condition of the hair.
Indian head massage has been developing in Europe since the 1970s and was introduced to the UK by Narendra Mehta. He adapted the traditional technique to target the specific negative effects that stress has upon our bodies.
Originally treatments offered by barbers differed from the massages performed by the women. In 1973 a gentleman by the name of Nahendra who grew up with receiving Indian head massages as a way of life came to England to train as a Physical Therapist, he was dismayed to find that head massage was not generally available and that even the full body massage seemed to completely neglect the head.
After much research into the ancient art of head massage, Nahendra extended the treatment to include the face, neck, upper arms and shoulder areas that accumulate high levels of stress and tension. by also introducing the Ayurvedic element into the massage to include work on the three higher Chakras (energy vortices) Visuddha, Ajna and Sahasrara the body's entire energy system could be rebalanced.
With the added areas included and the Ayurvedic element this is now an excellent holistic therapy without the negative side effects of some therapies which is used effectively to treat the whole person. Working on the head brings tremendous relaxation and relief from stress-related symptoms. In addition, head massage with oil serves as an excellent hair conditioner.
