The history of Indian head massage

Massage is probably the oldest known therapy to man, and has been practised in the far and middle east for at least 5000 years. The beneficial effects have been acknowledged for generations, and massage is a part of everyday activity, performed within the family from a very young age.

It is stated that the way to health is to have a scented bath and an oiled massage everyday. Unfortunately this is impossible in today's world, although we are starting to realise that we have to take responsibility for our own health.

Massage has always played an important part in Indian life. It features in the earliest Ayurvedic texts, which date back nearly 4000 years. These ancient texts describe that, when used in conjunction with herbs, spices and aromatic oils, massage has an important medical function and could not only strengthen muscles and firm the skin, but also encourage the body's innate healing energy.

Head massage originated in India over a thousand years ago. The origin of shampoo comes from a Hindi word 'Champi'. Being 'Champi-ed' meant having your head massaged. It began as the way to keep your long hair in beautiful condition and has become a part of daily life.

Indian head massage has been developing in Europe since the 1970s and was introduced to the UK by Narendra Mehta. He adapted the tradition technique to target the specific negative effects that stress has upon our bodies.

Indian head massage has received a lot of positive exposure through numerous articles, magazine features, and radio and television interviews since its introduction in the UK. This, together with the obvious efficacy of the treatment, has undoubtedly led to its current popularity amongst health practitioners and the general public as one of the leading complementary therapies in Great Britain. The future of traditional Head Massage in the twenty-first century is exciting. Touch of euphoria is proud to be part of it.
